This is from August 1985 of Ebony Magazine when they ran a feature called "What They May Look Like In The Year 2000". Basically predicting from their ass how famous' people will look like.

Full magazine is available on Google Books and this particular image is on page 163.

He had vitiligo, which is particularly disfiguring for darker people. he covered it up with makeup for years but eventually it became too hard (i imagine with stage and sweaty performances it would have been a nightmare) so he made the decision to permanently bleach into one colour, which is a possible treatment for vitiligo sufferers. his skin condition was confirmed in autopsy.

If he didn't have Vitiligo and an insecurity over his nose, he may have aged more gracefully. Probably not like in this example. But at least less freakish...Once the Vitiligo started becoming more apparent coupled with his personal insecurities and life as a world-recognized entertainer. It was going to be nearly impossible for him not to turn out freakish in some way.

Here you can see how he looked like each year (from 1961 till 2009 when he died)

The lack of knowledge about vitiligo certainly didn't help. People thought he was trying to look white. There was no public discourse about it. It was just one more "weird" thing about him. All the urban legends. He was considered pretty messed up until he died and everyone decided to accept him again. It's a strange cognitive dissonance.
